Education: Steve received his B.A. from UCLA in 1976, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon.

Steve received his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1979, where he was a Member and Associate Editor of the Stanford Law Review.  Steve did two externships while in school.

One was a judicial externship in 1978 for the Honorable Stanley Mosk, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, and the other was a political/community externship for U.S. Senator John V. Tunney in 1975-76.

Occupational History:Prior to becoming of counsel to Owens & Gach Ray, Steve practiced for 35 years at the law firm of Stutman, Treister & Glatt P.C., which was recognized throughout the country as a leader in the practice of bankruptcy, reorganization and insolvency law. While at Stutman, Steve represented debtors, creditors, trustees, receivers, committees, hedge funds, investors and individuals in all kinds of bankruptcy-related matters. Steve has primarily concentrated his practice in matters that involve litigation over the past 15 years. 

Teaching: Steve has taught law school courses as an adjunct professor during most of his legal career. He currently teaches Corporate Reorganization as a Lecturer at Stanford Law School, where he has taught every year since 2007 (and in 2002). He also currently teaches Corporate Reorganization as a Lecturer at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, where he has taught every year since 1989. Finally, Steve taught Bankruptcy as a Lecturer at Loyola Law School in 1984.

Bar Activities and Honors: Steve is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. He was the Chair of the State Bar of California Business Law Section Education Committee in 1994-95, and was a Member of the Business Law Section Executive Committee in 1995-98. He has been a frequent panelist at professional programs on bankruptcy and litigation topics, including those sponsored by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, California Continuing Education of the Bar, National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, and the American Bar Association, to name just a few. Steve is listed in several honorary publications, including Best Lawyers in America, Best Bankruptcy Lawyers in America, and Southern California Super Lawyers.

Community/Charitable Involvement: Much of Steve’s recent volunteer work involves Stanford. He is currently the Chair of the law school’s Board of Visitors, and has been a member of the Board since 1999. He has co-chaired three of his law school reunions, and has served on the committee for three others. He was the co-chair of Stanford’s Los Angeles Law Chapter from 2005-10. He was elected to membership in the Stanford University Associates around 1998, and received its Governor’s Award in 2014.
